I checked mine once, I don't remember the exact TDS reading but it was HIGH somewhere between 30 and 50, I think. After the DI it would check 1-3 TDS.

I would think that by directing the air/water mix downward that you would force a lot of your bubbles out the drain. I also don't believe that little bit of head pressure (on a 20" tall skimmer body)...
