Here is a link to our local club where we made a cheap version out of a tupperware container and PVC parts. It was under $10 plus a tupperware type container and required almost no tools....

I guess barbed fittings will work, but flex PVC is made to be glued into standard PVC fittings. You will also restrict the flow a little with barbed fittings because you are further reducing the ID....
