No you don't have to have the SCWD it just give more random and natural flow as far as outlets go I'm guessing your tank is 6' long so I would put 4 outlets spaced along the back

In a reef you do want lots of turnover and water...

In a reef you do want lots of turnover and water movement but you don't want it all going thru your sump IMHO I would keep the mag 9 for the return and use the mag18 on a closed loop system.

Looks very good I really like your aquascaping. I wouldn't bother with the mag 18 though you really only want 3 to 5 times turn over running thru your sump the mag 9 should be fine. Keep up the good...

I just upgraded to a 90 I'm using an Ehiem 1260 and loving it. just the right amount of flow and very quiet.
