Agree, much cheaper and safer methods out there for maintaining alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium. I use Randy's 2-Part and love it. ;)

Do you have a pic of the area that's turning black? How deep is your sandbed? Don't disturb this area or you will release the hydrogen sulfide gas, which can be deadly. Get some more flow going...
