Pseudechidna brummeri should be totally reef safe. It won't eat fish, dead or alive, nor snails. It will, however, eat any shrimp that you have in the tank, cleaner or otherwise, and will eat...

Thanks Mark. It's pretty easy to forget that we have all done things that we probably wouldn't repeat, and years of screwing up makes you a wiser, if more judgmental, reefer. Let's try to take the...

That's a really pretty fish, and as steri says, they are hearty, and hard to kill. I had a twin to your fish, and he ate one eye off every snail and hermit crab in the tank, so they all ran around...

Cowries are liable to graze on things, but I never heard of one that suddenly decided he wanted to wipe out your zoa's or eat your mushroom. They will rasp at algae, microorganisms on your rock, and...

Yup, RumLad told ya the truth. The warm water in reef tanks shortens the lives of the "Mexican Turbos" considerably. They aren't sold for the aquarium market because they are particularly suitable,...

Probably. If it has the typical "kicker" operc (curved, skinny, and sharp-pointed brown thing attached to the foot) and the ringed eyes, at least it's a conch of some type. It's a little odd...

Your snails are columbellids, known as "Dove Shells," and are generally considered to be nice guys. You may have more than one species, although the species in this family can be quite variable.

It's probably going to take more than a bump to get this one ID'ed. You're most likely going to have to take some more pics. If it's moving, you should be able to detach it and take some pics in a...

Hi Fischer's Angel,

I kept several species at different times, including Oliva paxillus (now considered by some to be a synonym of O. nitidula...?), but I never saw them exhibit the super-predator...

That's not the kind that is usually just part of the cleanup crew. As they get larger, their diet expands, and may include some things you don't want eaten. I wouldn't say it's terribly likely that...

I had always heard that olive snails were scavengers. But, I learned after keeping a few species that they will happily kill other animals in the tank. They kill them by grabbing them with their...

I can't guarantee that you don't have some sundial snails eating your zoanthids, but I can guarantee you that little snail in the pic isn't one. It's a Collonista/Homalopoma, and as you thought,...

In general, the LFS people and other sellers wayyyy overestimate the number of snails you'll need for a cleanup crew. You would probably be better off to think in terms of the number of square feet...

Heh, Leslie probably isn't using a quick reference, she actually has access to scientific literature. The guides tend to be "one size fits all" and can compress 2,000 species into 40 pics. They are...
