Thanks guys. My tank is large 800 gallons total volume. I will stay with GFO.
Seems to me in this hobby there is not a quick fix for anything and leaving impurities in the water if not a needed...

film on top of the tank does not seem right I would try to remedy first but if no ammonia or nitrite add a couple of fish. However the film on the top of the tank will cause poor gas exchange.

Just use a pump that fits the application as GFO does not take much flow to work and actually if you flow to much water GFO will break down and enter tank No good also if to fast you can see a drop...

wavemakers like red sea are just an on and off timer. Starting the pump is the most stress on the impeller. Your basically going from 0 to over 3000 rpm. Try starting your car 100-200 times a day....

just make sure pumps are easily removed hiding pump behind rocks can cause problems as all pumps mentioned need reg. maint. and if hidden either you will forget to clean or worse intake strainers...
