New to me used tank help

Just bought a used 55 gallon saltwater setup. Quick question...We drained the tank to about an inch above the sand which got stirred up pretty good. Should I do anything to the sand before filling...

Was the guy at the lfs place correct about being able to use the canister filter instead of the skimmer?
