Pacific diadema urchins and tuxedo urchins both ate Udotea (Caribbean mermaid fan) in my tank. My Udotea was thicker, stiffer, and grew by runners though the sand unlike this stuff.

Search Gelidium, Gelidiopsis, or "red wire algae". Its not as strong as "wire" but the strands are relatively tough compared to other macro algae. Diadema urchins eat red turfs fairly reliably IME....
