I'm tempted, though if I go that route it would be the last thing I would try because once the bearings are locked into place the pump would never come apart again, as the bearing cases are hidden...

On second thought, the "pre-sump" idea wouldn't work because you would have to make sure that water is coming out of your tank as fast as your skimmer pumps are pulling water out of the "pre-sump"....
