Both. Your sump will collect enough detritus on the bottom...you don't need the sponges and pad collecting adding to it.

Actually that helps out a lot, because I was thinking the same thing you were about trying to save money and go with the 2 MHs on the 4ft tank. I think I may just save and get a 180 or 210. :)
