I just stick a piece of 3/16" aquarium tubing...
I just stick a piece of 3/16" aquarium tubing inside the tube in the silencer and blow down that to start the pump -- it's easier than trying to get my head in there :-)

Don't drill your u-tube! It will hold a siphon fine in a power outage. As long as you have decent volume going thru it the bubbles will siphon out too.
