If it's a glass tank the sylicone will dry out over time and will eventually need to be re-syliconed. You are better off leaving the tank with water.

For a 180 I would make it in wood. Wood is inexpensive, strong and doesn't rust. Just put some PolyCrilic on it so it can last a long time.

Actually the Dart will probably be pulling more like 160 watts, which is still a very small amount of electricity for the caliber of that skimmer.

1/2" is alot, specially for a Glass Tank that long, he will definately have to do something about it, like shim the stand, otherwise there will be a great deal of pressure on the center of the glass.

The stand may look small, but look at the wall outlet on the lower right and you can get an idea of it's actual size....
