If you don't have a skimmer, then get the largest, most expensive skimmer you can...

24/7 Except when you feed filter-feeding critters. Just unplug the skimmer and filter-bag (micro-filter if you have one) for a few hours or overnight.
I shut mine off when I feed micro food!
