I can see a lot of what is in the bucket as looking like pests but alot of those creatures look like small crustaceans, ie:copopods and amphipods... redbugs are tiny, flatworms well thats obvious.

The true problem with carbon that I have experienced is a drop in PH. It seems to lower ph a lot and that will cause problems if done to quickly with too much fresh carbon at once. I use fluidized...

AGREED.... another reason why I only use TEK 5 lights now... lol I wont do Halides anymore not afterthat incident, and I always shut off my lights now... but I wont do that heat ever again.
