You can put it 4" to 6" above the tank. Depends on what coral you want to keep, it can be ok for 48" tank. I have 6' tank with 4' fixture, I can grow LPS, softies, or deep water acro on the sides....

I'm not sure if other tank mates noticed the eggs. I think they chose a good place before they spawned. And the little male is on duty 24/7.
I also thought the mandarin goby may spot the eggs....

I would move the stand and do ceramic tile or hardwood floor in the area. So I wouldn't need to worry about water on carpet when doing water change, or if it ever flood again.

I have 20" deep tank, and I have a hard time finding spots for deep water acro frags. I'd say the light penetration of T5 and MH is about the same. You can't grow many SPS at sandbed with MH anyway.

I'm interested to see the result. I'd think you need 1:2 for tank+sump volume. That's about what eddybabyhd is using.
I tried 1:10 with MA before didn't see much different.

T5 will heat up about the same as MH. But MH is more of radiation that can go in the tank easier. Heat from T5 can be reduced with fans.
