Norman - it's not stained at all. It's natural red oak covered in a polyuerothane to bring out the natural wood color. It could be sanded and re-stained any color you wish.

1.5" for the intake, and 4 1" for the bottom ones. I did mine myself, but Mike will take care of you there too if you're so inclined.
My only advice would be to replace his bulkheads...

I wouldn't change anything. You want them as close to the edges as possible to prevent dead spots. Sand doesn't blow around after it gets settled, but running at 50% during the sand...
