Thats spot on , I went skimmerless for about 3 years , just did weekly water changes. (Unfortunately I had a power cut when I was away for the weekend and lost everything :( but starting up again)

I did have that problem when I upgraded to metal...
I did have that problem when I upgraded to metal halides.
I just removed as much algae as I can , cut down the light times, reduce feeding and do regualr water changes.

The water contains (all in mg/L) -
Chlorides 50
Sodium 33
