You don't have to have baffles by any means. One of my sump/fuges is nothing but a 20g with a cheap divider to separate the pump and heater. You will need to put a check valve on your return line....

Ya a 26g would make a much better reef tank. Using a 26g greatly reduces your options on fish. Personally I would only keep a few small fish, some inverts and pack it with coral.
