It will only overflow what the return pump can provide though. I'm using an Eheim 1262, so it will return ~800gph or so. Flow through the sump should be fine.

The last big hurdle is getting the stand stained. It's far to cold to stain here, and we were going to move it out of my garage to my buddy's basement and stain it there, but he just hurt his back...

I'm not sure what the shortest length of T5 would be (24"?) but with only 10 inches of water, you really wouldn't need MH... You might even get away with CF in that shallow a depth.

I wouldn't trust a rough 1/2cup per gallon measurement. Get a refractometer or at least a hydrometer to check salinity and match it to your display tank.
