Just to let you know a digital zoom will make a picture look bad. Optical is the only way to keep the picture clear. I turn the digital zoom off on any camera I have as the pictures look like crap...

The Nikon D40 is a decent camera but 6.1mp is a little low to upgrade to today at any price imho. Although you would still have all the dlsr advantages.

I love the live view on my 40D. Do you have the live exposure simulation turned on. It will adjust the lcd to show how the picture will expose while you change settings.

If you don't have a remote try the 2 second timer if your model has one. I use that to minimize shake when I take a picture.
