I would think that if you did it with saltwater...
I would think that if you did it with saltwater it would be cycled for saltwater from the rotting gunk. With RO you would still have to cycle it again.

it helps to feed them, I feed mine every other day or so. I feed mysis and finely chopped squid by squirting it into their tentacles. It works great.

Weird, I'm using the same pump the skimmer is set at the water line marked on the body and I have no problems with it. It pushes out tons of dark nasty skimmate. I'm puzzled by your result.
