I agree that light is necessary for photosynthesis but it is not necessary to produce energy. If organic source of carbon is present there is no need to add CO2. This is incorrect?

You want enough flow so basically nothing is settling on the sand. Hard to say if 500 gph is enough with out knowing the dimensions of the basket. Maybe a spray bar would help disperse the flow...
