well i just mentioned that it was base rock...

well i just mentioned that it was base rock because it came from my old tank and was out of water for about 3 years.
It's pretty fine sand.

Why cant you use another tank for a sump?

I have a 20 gallon long that is just hangin out not doin anything. I was thinking of doing a sump anyway under my 75 gallon main tank. My skimmer will be in the sump, but I don't know what else...
