A plywood stand is enough for any standard size tank -- no 2x members needed -- if you know what you're doing and use proper plywood joinery techniques.

You second design is much, much better than the original. A single layer of 3/4" plywood is certainly strong enough for your stand design, even with door openings. Just be sure to leave at least 3"...

The reactor doesn't add calcium to the tank, it maintains your current level. You add calcium buffer to get to where you want the level to be, then the calc reactor runs to keep it there.
