i use them, mostly because of size. and they are ok on sound, if you submerge and isolate the pumps you cant hear them at all, even if you have your head inside the cabinet! but they will add heat...

sched 40 pipe and fittings are fine for all other plumbing needs.
and 80 pipe and fitting are a kinda overkill but if you have thousands...
