Only thing I will add to this conversation is that someone asked whether a change in temperature will change the bacteria present. I would say that's very likely as this is what happens in nature...

I think what makes it work is the minerals that deposit on the wire and get charged around it so yes our small aquariums may be mineral limited but no one knows until we try :) Do it!!!

Not that plexiglass is any less good of an idea but in the Monterey Bay aquarium they use sheets of thin blue plastic. Just did a search for transparent blue plastic sheet and found this on ebay....

Barryhc, don't forget that the tropical sun is much stronger than our northern hemisphere sun anyways though....

And as for this extra transmitted UV being harmful, I doubt it since many corals actually are exposed to direct sunlight when the tides recede. Maybe some corals aren't gonna be big fans but I think...

As for if there is a deficiency of UV problem, I think experience would tell us no. Many of us use lights that are completely UV blocked and likely our corals are not getting UV but we still can keep...
