Since it's all based on the idea of a floating bed of Sargassum, I would ditch the substrate all together and stick to a BB setup, mimicking the open water with the attention on the actual Sargassum...

Thanks for the info. If you happen to find and try some Hermissenda crassicornis, I'd be interested to hear if your starfish leave them alone (I think fish tend to stay away from them).

Just a tip on the photos: if you have Adobe Photoshop or anything similar, taking the ones that look pretty washed out and doing the "auto fix" thing on them can help them look a bit better.
