If you use a small amount of rock salt (for water softener, etc), you'll end up with very porous, yet solid rock. I've done this on several occasions and it's never crumbled.

I had the 18" on my 50g, but it takes up too much real estate on the back of the tank. I have another fuge in the sump, so I took the CPR off. I may use it in the future on a smaller tank.
