This is true, but if you wash the carbon properly you will not have the leeching of black stuff back into your system.
Having said that I agree that carbon should only be used as needed.

Restoring your live rock should not be a problem...
Restoring your live rock should not be a problem especially if thats your sole goal.
I would start off by limiting your lighting schedule to maybe a couple of hours a day heavy skimming and water...
