I would still be hesitant to go with a hawk and pistol. Yes the pistol's carapace would most likely be a deterrent to the hawk if the shrimp is big enough. Even then the hawk may harrass the shrimp...

I just put the original one back in the main...
I just put the original one back in the main tank....I had him in a separate tank...so I think that rules out chemicals. Lights are about 2 months old. I will go ahead and do all water params again...
