Personally...I would put a tee from my return...

Personally...I would put a tee from my return pump with a ball valve to feed the refugeium. Saves having an extra pump and the maintenance. Also saves energy.

Why did you not have the water flow...

Sure it will work. As long as the intake pipe stays below the sump water level and you have a cap to prime the pump it will work flawlessly.
