I am now 90% sure that I was actually having two seperate things breed in my tank at once. The twitchy mosquito larva things were almost certainly the hermit crabs, since I saw them coming...

I'd almost guarantee that the fish are tank raised. That's the one downside to tank raised fish - they don't always exhibit the same behavior as wild ones.

BTW, forget about trying to inject each aiptasia with calc, boiling water, etc. You'll never keep up with the little bastards. Get one or two peppermint shrimp and never have a problem with them...
