The package says to rinse the sand first is this necessary if so the sand cake up when wet and probably won't slide down the funnel. Might have to put it in a cup and pour right on to the sand bed...

Let say your nitrate read at 20 ppm. If you shut down your uv. Will your nitrate decrease since your not eradicating the nitrogenous bacteria in your water column. Just a thought.
