I've got a big problem, built my sump to the specs of this footprint (7x9). Smallest side I can find is 8" and it does not fit in my sump.

I have plastic bowl and I fill it with tank water or fresh mixed saltwater.
Then rinse/ring/squeeze the sponge in that and dump the water down the drain...

Best to keep the sponge in your sump for a few weeks at the least before using it in the qt.
Rinse it out once a week while it's in the sump, using tank water.
