have you looked at night when the tank lights are off? My nana has almost no daytime polyps, but at night with a flashlight it is down right hairy. have a look at night and let us know.

gutter mesh is what i use. The holes that create the mesh fit over the cut outs of the overflow to cover the top and still allows the water to flow without any restriction. It's a nice snug fit.

have you considered the new mj mods? i have two in my 3 foot 55g...brilliant flow and only minimal PH's to clutter the back of the tank..and with the swivel arm...you can aim them however you like.

PPFD is the usable light for growth...the higher the number the greater potential for growth...color temp is what you should be looking for.

what is the lowest PPFD that is determined acceptable for growth? I currently use 2x 250W 10K xm SE bulbs. I know that the PPFD for this bulb on an electric ballast( i use PFO) is about 115.
