I just did this over the weekend. Worked well for me. I also freshwater dipped my liverock to kill off as many flatworms as possible, but thats another story. Everything seem to be doing well so far....

Not sure about the size, but Danner Mag drive pumps are very reliable and the two I use are pretty quiet.

I had much of the same problems. Increasing my flow really helped the cyano, and I've found that turbo snails will often help control your hair algae.

I've heard of people just using an airstone and pump. Probably takes less power than the skimmer and maybe the powerhead so it will last longer in the case of a long outtage.
