My two never showed polyps for over a year until I moved them to another tank...then they started showing polyps and growing like crazy. In my case I think it was more intense lighting...

One way to eliminate the need for auto top off...
One way to eliminate the need for auto top off during vacation, is to reduce the salinity a week or two before you leave, down to about 1.20. That way evaporation won't push the salinity too high.
