I think the top one is a skeleton of Siderastrea (aka golfball coral) a common hitchhiker, and the bottom one is live porites, that is one tough coral.

It's a fairly old idea...they used to have a system where you added SUGAR to get it up to the right SG, and SW and FW fish can live together. Called "Magic Aquarium" or something. Such a bad idea!
