most sponges are impossible to keep in home tanks. The water is just too clean.. q-tip sponges seem to be an exception, I would just put it back as close to where you found it as possible.

IMO the 400Gph from the sump is about double what it should be... sump flows should be 3 to 5X tank capacity

Total tank flow depends on what you have in it.. 20X to 50X are the ranges most use.
