I have primarily soft corals - zoanthids, leather, mushrooms and some large polyp and clams. I have kept dwarf angels with much success.

Canister filter

Canister filter should not be necessary and if not maintained a good source for Nitrate to build. Sounds like the root cause is some problem with sump set up.

I set up a 75 gallon and had the holes drilled in the sides near the top.
I used pvc elbows in the tank and can actually control the amount of flow to the sump by raising or lowering the elbows.
