I went ahead and cut a hole in the skimmer lid to fit the Tunze in it's recommended position.
After a quick "measure twice cut once" I went ahead and cut a hole with a jig saw....

The green gizmo is the plastic frame for the Whisper brand filter I'm using. It used to sit right behind the overflow but now there's no room with the Tunze mounted on the right side.
