First of all I would start looking for different...
First of all I would start looking for different mods you can do with the pump (switch pumps?) to get better skimming from it.
CPR use to use some pretty puny pumps with their skimmers.

They still may survive. When leathers go down for the big one, they usually melt away or just deteriorate.
Leave them be, but in a area of moderate flow. Not directly at them.
