Yep, fully agree. Top off is the way to go and does not need to be extravagant. I currently use a 15 gallon aquarium for the top off, and use my 32 gallon mixing can if I go on vacation.

Cut the riser tube to about 3 inches and insert an air stone...best mods if you want to get anything significant. Also IIRC, there was something with how the skimmate tube was inserted in the lid...
