It's a harmless fireworm. It's not Hermodice, nor does it have anything to do with the loss of your clams. The only drawbacks are that it's ugly and the spines will irritate you if you touch them.

The animals in the sand don't care about the edges, but if you have an acrylic tank they can be a problem. Besides looks there's really no other reason clean quartz sand is a problem.

Are you sterilizing the brine shrimp hatchery between batches? If you don't you can get poor hatch rates from bacteria or protozoans that contaminate the culture. Just rinse the hatchery with water...
