You could take the sand you siphon out and place it in a dark area ie closet for a couple for weeks to kill the alge then rinse it with NSW and put it back in the tank. Kinda like cooking the sand....

The skimmer box works with both pumps. The muffler that came with mine keeps it pretty quiet. You should be able to get the surface skimmer box at most good LFS.

Keep in mind that silicone will not stick to itself. You need to remoe all the old stuff. I think they make a silicone remover that I would use after taking off as much as possible with a razor...
