I'm using the mesh cover also, lost a supermale lineatus once because of a 2 inch gap. I wouldn't take the chance on a $500.00 fish...

should be blue/white right from the start. i ran one using an aromat electronic ballast, bulb was brand new and it was crisp white/blue. maybe has to do with your ballast or wrong bulb?
