did the pump come with a downsizing coupling on the intake? if so did you remove it? If you restrict the flow between the sump and pump by turning the valve slightly, do the micro bubbles increase?

nice work but i have a concern about your surge tank. It looks like it's suported by metal brackets and the brackets will get rusted eventually and weaken to the point of breaking. keep an eye on...

you can buy a di cartridge and use it in the post filter as you stated if it is the standard as home depo or lowes. buy the refillable type di filter cartridge because you can refill just the media...
