I top off about 2 gallons most days, but some days it is less than a gallon and other days its up towards 4 gallons. This is on a 55 gallon tank.

Just use the clove oil. It will be the most painless. If you do not want to do that just freeze the fish. It is the most humane, pain-free way to do it.

I think you should try to do larger water changes than 25%, even if it is just 50% once every 3-4 weeks instead. Making a large water change to start off with will remove more percentage of the tap...

I only used 2 inches of sand, but even that was only about 6 pounds of sand. After the sand I have about 4-5 pounds of rock rubble and a large amount of macro.
