I've read before that they need silica to thrive and grow fast. I have a couple that have developed pretty quickly and I have a silica-based DSB.

I have had a DSB made of silica sand in my 55 gallon and there is absolutely nothing wrong with silica. It makes an excellent DSB and its natural no matter what anyone else tells you.
