Way back when, you left water exposed to air, in order for Chlorine (in the tap water) to evaporate. These days, most city water uses Chloramine instead, which does not...

I think it likes clean water (as I have immeasureable nitrates and phosphates).
I adjusted my flow higher recently, and it bloomed in areas that receive high flow.
